NASA will invent and China will steal the IP. Rongxing Li, who worked on NASA's Mars Rover disappeared. LOL dislike for misleading title! They havent done shit...they used technology we had for a while but its impractical here, in our society, due to safety reasons. Our tires are rubber and inflated, meanwhile those are all-terrain rigid-skeleton-structured wheels...nothing new, we just never used it here cuz they dont allow it!

Why even use wheels. why not have like 6 walker type legs that move like ants legs. If its already movin slower than my grandma anyways. Those would never break and would be just as effecient

Was loving the video until 3:57 when he refers to the "higher gravity on Mars". Seriously?!? Mars' gravity is only 38% of the gravity on Earth, therefore the wheel is only carrying slightly more than a third of the vehicle's weight compared to when it is sitting on Earth. This of course makes the wheels job easier, not harder.

"Higher gravity on mars", compared to the low gravity on the Moon, where tires he's talking about were used.

@2:43, you said it used a "nuclear reactor for power." Not really. It uses a radioisotope thermoelectric generator. Nuclear reactors are currently under development for Mars but have not yet been tried there.

I'm curious as to the longevity of such a material in this application. Does the materiel break down from repeated stress over time or does its unique lattice structure circumvent that?

What if the rover didn't have to touch the ground ? And did you say that there is a mini nucular reactor on that rover.

Vor 13 Tage
Pootis Spencer Here
Pootis Spencer Here

1. How exactly would you move it around and keep it off the ground? 2. It's not really a nuclear reactor, it's a radioisotope thermal generator (RTG), in which a radioactive isotope (of plutonium, I believe) decays slowly and creates heat in doing so. You really don't get a whole lot of power out of such a thing, which is why the rover moves this slowly.

Is nitinol also susceptible to metal fatigue? I know regular metal fatigue is due to microscopic local failures occuring each time the material is stressed. But since nitinol is "superelastic" does that mean it is much less vulnerable (or even immune)?

i ts is not reinventing it is more like redesigning it.. wheel is just a round shape it doesn't matter if you make it with rubber, aluminum, nitinol , or freaking gold its just a wheel the complexities lies in how the further problems are dealt with like you explained in the video.

Real Engineering, What I don't understand is 1:54 why not cast and temper to create a single crystal matrix? they've done it for years on jet turbine blades i thought. Forging then machining that much material is obviously more expensive... also a single crystal matrices are to my knowledge significantly stronger of any comparable material with any amount of beneficial dislocation from forging.

It's not exactly the wheel that was reinvented, was it? Think about it - the idea of wheel, a durable disc revolving around its central axis to support the car and make it move forward with ease, hasn't changed at all. What they created is a new way to protect the wheel from the terrain. If anything, they reinvented the TIRE.
